# Automatic events

> Events the SDK reports on its own, so retention means the same thing in every app.

These names start with `$` so they can never collide with your own events.
The dashboard marks them as autocaptured, so you can always tell our
instrumentation from yours.

| Event | When | Properties |
| - | - | - |
| `$app_installed` | First launch of a fresh install (a reinstall counts). Users who already had your app when you adopted the SDK are not reported as installs. | `version`, when you pass `appVersion` |
| `$app_updated` | First launch after `appVersion` changed | `previous_version`, `version` |
| `$app_open` | The app is opened, including a cold launch. Returning from Control Center, the app switcher, a call or a permission alert doesn't count. | `from_background`: `"false"` exactly once per launch |
| `$app_backgrounded` | The user left the app, ending the session `$app_open` started | |
| `$notification_permission_changed` | Permission changed: the answer to your prompt, or a change in Settings while the app was closed | `from`, `to` |
| `$notification_delivered` | The [extension](https://docs.pushnotif.ai/sdk/delivery-telemetry.md) processed one of our pushes on the device | `send_id` |
| `$notification_tapped` | The user tapped one of our notifications | `send_id` |
| `$notification_dismissed` | The user swiped one of our notifications away | `send_id` |

Permission values are one of `notDetermined`, `denied`, `authorized`,
`provisional` and `ephemeral`. A permission change is noticed whenever the SDK
reads the permission: each time the app comes back to the foreground with
swizzling on, or whenever you call `updateNotifPermissionStatus`.

## Turning off lifecycle events

If you already track your own app open, background, install and update events
and don't want both, set `capturesAppLifecycleEvents: false`. That turns off
the four `$app_*` events only. Permission and notification events are always
reported, because the engine needs them.
